Julia and Grandma Peltz’s Pie Crust

Ingredients:

1 egg

White vinegar

Water

Sugar

6 cups all purpose flour

1 lb (2 cups) shortening

Directions:

Break an egg into a measuring cup. Add 1 tablespoon white vinegar (they always used Heinz). Add another “dab” of vinegar. Mix well with a fork. Add water to equal 1 cup, then add another “dab” of vinegar. Add 1 1/2 tablespoons of sugar (That’s the trick! It helps make it flaky.) Mix well.

In a large bowl, mix 6 cups all purpose flour and 1 lb. (2 cups) shortening. Use a fork to combine them until the mixture looks mealy.

Add the vinegar mixture and mix with your hands. Don’t overwork it! When the sides of the bowl are clean, you’re done.

Break into 6 equal size balls. Freeze any you don’t use right away (in zip lock bags).
